Campbell County Health recently issued the following announcement.

On March 21, 2022, Campbell County Health presented a DAISY Award to Samantha Coleman, RN, who works in the Campbell County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) Medical Surgical department.

The Daisy Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care given by nurses every day. Samantha has worked as an RN for Campbell County Health since February 2019.

Samantha was nominated for the DAISY Award by one of her patients in December 2021.

After a number of health issues and hospital admissions since the summer of 2021, the patient was feeling hopeless and defeated, saying he “…was just waiting to die”. Samantha was his nurse on his third day in the Medical Surgical Unit. He felt she could sense his despair. As she cared for him and listened to his story, she was kind and empathetic, telling him he needed to “fight the good fight!” For the patient, it was those four little words and her caring spirit that lifted him out of his hopelessness.

Though the patient doesn’t know what the future holds, he does know that he will continue to “fight the good fight”. He is “beyond grateful” to his nurse Sam, who recognized his despair and saved his life.

“Sam is a kind and engaged listener who practices a calm and gentle approach that enhances her relationships and interactions with our patients and their families,” said CCH Medical Surgical Manager Laura Castellanos. “She is a delightful and valuable member of our Medical Surgical team. Every week we observe and hear remarks of how Sam has left encouraging and inspiring memories and impressions on her patients.”

Congratulations, Samantha, on your DAISY Award. We’re proud to have you on our team.
