Today, Congresswoman Harriet Hageman announced that her staff will take part in the House of Representatives Election Observer Program. This initiative will deploy congressional observers to election sites nationwide to gather factual information during election contests or seating battles.
Representative Hageman expressed her support for the program by referencing earlier legislative efforts: “Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed the SAVE Act, which I cosponsored, to require states to obtain proof of citizenship—in person—when registering an individual to vote, as well as to require states to remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls. The Chuck Schumer-led Senate failed to take up the bill."
Hageman emphasized the importance of maintaining trust in elections: “To safeguard election integrity, we must use all means available to us. That is why my office is participating in the House Election Observer Program. Faith in our electoral process is the bedrock of our system of government. It is vital that every legal vote is counted, fraudulent voting is detected and reported, and proper chain of custody procedures for ballots are carefully followed at polling locations.”
According to information from the Committee on House Administration, more than 200 Republican congressional staffers have signed up for participation across over 60 Member and Leadership offices and 12 full and subcommittees. The 2024 Election Observer Program represents a significant effort toward ensuring election integrity within the House's history.
This program comes at a time when concerns about election integrity are prominent among voters. It aims to ensure that every lawful vote is counted accurately in free and fair elections, particularly where there are significant challenges related to election administration or where outcomes could shift political majorities.
