Laken Riley Act signed into law by President Trump

Congresswoman Harriet Hageman joined President Trump in Washington, D.C., as he signed the Laken Riley Act into law. The legislation aims to strengthen border security and reflects Congresswoman Hageman's commitment to national safety.

"The deaths of Laken Riley, Sarah Root, and countless others are an unnecessary and heartbreaking loss, and this is how we honor their memory," stated Congresswoman Hageman. "This legislation gives our state and federal law enforcement the tools they need to ensure criminal illegal aliens are detained and not given the opportunity to commit additional crimes. The American people demanded action on immigration, and this legislation is the first of many that will deliver on that promise. I am honored to stand with the President as he signs this bill into law and gives voice to the victims and their families who have suffered unspeakable loss as a result of the Biden-Harris Administration’s horrific border policies."

The Laken Riley Act addresses cases involving illegal immigrants who commit specific crimes such as theft or assault against law enforcement officers. It mandates ICE to detain these individuals to prevent further offenses. Additionally, it empowers state attorneys general to sue for injunctive relief if federal immigration actions negatively impact their states.

Sarah's Law also forms part of this legislative effort. Named after Sarah Root, who was killed by an illegal immigrant driving under influence, it closes legal loopholes that previously allowed offenders like her killer to evade detention by ICE.
