Congresswoman Hageman addressed livestock producers at the Livestock Producers Freedom Rally in Rapid City, South Dakota. She discussed concerns regarding the mandatory electronic identification (EID) eartags proposed by the USDA.
Hageman highlighted potential negative impacts of this requirement on independent cattle and bison producers. "In their relentless drive to put pressure on independent cattle and bison producers, the USDA is again attempting to implement an EID requirement that will have a tremendous impact on livestock operations," she said. She warned that non-compliance could result in loss of access to interstate markets, putting ranchers at financial risk.
She further criticized the rule for benefiting large corporations while burdening smaller producers. "The consolidation of power in the hands of a few, at the expense of small and independent farmers and ranchers is a threat to our entire food supply," Hageman stated. She praised livestock producers for their innovative practices but expressed concern over what she described as cynicism towards American ranchers.
Hageman urged attendees to contact their federal representatives to support her resolution, H.J.Res 167, and Senator Lummis' S.J.Res 98. "It is critical that each and every one of you call your Congressman and Senators... urgent action is needed before this rule goes into effect November 5th," she emphasized.
The Congresswoman framed the situation as a battle between grassroots ranchers and corporate interests, urging congressional attention through public advocacy.
